Spotting a New Leader

We’re now approaching the end of the school year, and many of you CU leaders out there are probably finishing your last term and planning the exciting new step of what comes after school.

Others First?

“Others First” – we print it on posters, we wear “Others First” badges, we keep using the phrase on Facebook and to add to it all, we’ve written an article about it. Really, what’s the fuss all about?

Info for Parents

As parents, we know that your child’s safety is of the utmost importance. That’s why we will do our best to answer any questions that you may have. If any topics or questions are not covered here, then please feel free to contact us on the address below.

What is New Generation?
New Generation is a registered charity in the UK (registered number 1119545.) We have worked in the UK for the last 5 years. We are a cross-denominational organisation that has a very simple aim: we want to encourage young to gather together in groups in school to live out their faith in an organised and intentional way. We specifically do this by encouraging our members to commit to prayer and outreach.

Does it cost any money?
New Generation is a non-profit organisation. We do not charge for membership, there are no subscription fees or hidden costs. It is all completely free. We do sell merchandise on our webshop, however, you must be 18 or over to purchase anything. We also charge a minimal fee for events, such as our young leader training day called “Faith, Hope & School.” The charge for such an event is simply to help cover the expenses of the day.

In what way will you be in contact with my child?
After a child has signed up to New Generation we will be in contact with them using the following channels:

Mobile Phone (texts and calls)
Home Phone
Email
Facebook/Social Media

We may not use all of these methods, but we normally use several of them. When using the internet/social media and mobile phones we have trained our staff and interns to use plain English language and nothing that could deemed as misleading or inappropriate. The staff and interns do not contact members using their private mobile numbers or Facebook pages. We always use our work phones and the official New Generation Facebook and Twitter accounts.

4. What protective measures does New Generation take to insure the safety of my child?
Everybody working with New Generation goes through an application and interview process. Each applicant to New Generation must give two references, one from their local church leader and the other from a close friend. We also include training each year on our Safeguarding Policy, whereby we train our interns and staff on how to safely work with young people. If you would like a copy of our Safeguarding Policy then please contact us on the address below. We also ensure that our workers have CRB forms. As we have a number of new interns each year, it can take a while for them to be processed at the beginning of each year, but we always begin this process well before the academic year starts, and in all cases, we have received a police record check from each intern prior to the commencement of the year.

Is New Generation connected to any external umbrella organisations?
We are registered with The Charity Commission, and are regulated by them in accordance with British charity law. New Generation is also a member of CCPAS (The Churches’ Child Protection Advisory Service.) This is the organisation that issue New Generation’s CRB forms and also the organisation we turn to for advice in Child Safety and Protection. You can visit their website here: www.ccpas.co.uk.

6. Why must you meet my child outside of the school?
This is not regarded as preferred practice at New Generation, as our work revolves around schools and we attempt to conduct any meetings with young people in the school itself. Having said that, sometimes for planning reasons it is easier for us, or the young person we are meeting, to meet outside of the school in a nearby church or coffee shop. If you do not feel comfortable with this, then please contact us. If you would like to be present when we meet your child you are very welcome to sit in with us. We will always meet in public places and it is never a one-on-one meeting, as we only ever do visits with 2 or more team members at a time.

7. Are you connected to a specific denomination?
No. We work with a wide range of churches and we have a commitment to work with any church that agrees with the Apostolic Creed.

8. What is your connection to my local church?
At New Generation we encourage all of our members to be involved with a local church. To the best of our ability we are in contact with the churches that our members are connected to. We do not in any way want to compete with the local church by asking young people to engage with something that distracts them from the vision and goals of their local church. Our aim is to support the local church and provide resources and material to help in reaching the schools and colleges they have around them.

9. Will you protect the details of my child?
Yes. Your child’s details are protected by data protection laws. We do not pass on any details to any other organisations or companies.

10. I do not want my child to be a member of New Generation, what should I do?
If you do not wish your child to be a member of New Generation then just contact us using the details below and we will immediately delete all the information we have on your child from our website.

We hope that these questions will help inform you a little about the organisation and how we aim to protect your child. If you have any further questions then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Does it cost anything to start a New Generation group?
No, it’s completely free. We will provide you with magazines, access to our NG+ login area, and you’ll also get visits from our Teams, all for free. We think that’s a pretty good deal.

How many schools do you have groups in here in the UK?
We have over 350 registered school groups all over the country. They’re all different shapes and sizes, but have a common goal to regularly pray and reach out in their schools.

With Christians from different churches involved, how do we keep unity in the group?
We believe it’s on God’s heart to see his people united, and what better place to start than the young generation? We encourage our groups to shift their attention from discussing differences to focusing on being an example in school. Leaving deeper Bible studies on doctrine and denominational tradition to the church allows the New Generation group to focus on prayer and outreach.

Do I have to be a Christian to be involved in a New Generation group?
No, anyone is welcome to attend meetings and investigate the Christian faith, and everyone is also welcome to join in with social action initiatives and other projects run by the New Generation group.

As a Youth Leader how can I get involved?
If you’d like to get your church involved, check out the You & NG, Support NG and Events sections on our website to find out more about connecting with us and working together.

What’s New Generation’s attitude towards local church?
New Generation wants to work alongside local churches to inspire, encourage and help young Christians to pray and reach out to friends and classmates. When the school day is over, so is New Generation. Outside of school hours we encourage our groups and members to be engaged in their youth groups and in church. For more information, see our You & NG, Support NG and Events sections.

What’s New Generation’s attitude towards other organisations in schools?
New Generation is a complement to existing organisations engaged in schoolswork and we focus primarily on developing resources, material and training that are not available elsewhere. We regularly partner on projects with friends in other charities and ministries working in schools.

How is New Generation funded?
Most of our Team is made up of volunteers on a gap year, generally supported by private sponsors and their own savings. Their fees cover some costs, and we also receive support from New Generation’s international foundation. We also rely heavily on donations from churches, businesses and our Supporters.

Get Involved

All we need now is a few simple details and we’ll be in touch to follow thing up. Just choose which of the drop-down options suits you and/or tick the appropriate boxes and we’re sorted. Dead easy!

I’m guessing you already know that we believe that Christian young people can make a difference in their schools and colleges. I’m also going to assume that that’s something you believe too. If you’re a young person, Church leader or schools worker, then we want to invite you to our training day; Faith, Hope & School. For over 5 years in the UK and since 1996 in Europe, New Generation has been supporting young Christians to live out their faith in a visible way. We’ve encouraged them to commit to prayer and outreach, and done our best to support them in doing that.

Over the years we’ve heard so many amazing stories and ideas. We’ve also seen some not so great ideas and some that are plain ridiculous. All that being said we want to pass those experiences on, and also hear what you are doing in school right now. You’ll also get an opportunity to meet other young people that are in the exact same position as you are.

The day is full of practical, interactive sessions all based around developing you as a young Christian who can positively impact the people around you. It’s not about success or numbers, it’s about following Jesus and being salt and light to a generation that needs to see him. It’s no easy task, but it’s still the right path and we hope the day will be inspirational, practical and will prepare you for the realities you face daily at school.

What can I expect the sessions to include?
- Prayer & Outreach
- Social Action and Jesus
- Bring out the organiser in you!
- Speaking to the Head teacher
- Shed-loads of testimonies
- Practical ideas and much much more…
Don’t take my word for it, you’ll just have to come along and see.
