We just started a Christian school group. How do we get going?
Start by looking around here on NG+. We’ve collected loads of valuable tips and ideas here, and you should be able to find some good resources to use in your first weeks and months. Also, make sure you contact the local Teamers in the region where you live. They’ll be able to give you advice, tips and help, and they’ll even come and visit your school to help you get going. You can find their contact details here!
What is an outreach?
An outreach is something your group does to intentionally share the message of Jesus or display the Christian faith in a clear and concrete way. Whether you’re a 1-person group or there’s 100 of you, there’s lots of things you can do. It’s not the size of your outreach project that’s the most important, just that you do something. An outreach can involve handing out Bibles to your class, baking cakes to hand out in the school, or just deciding that each of you will always sit next to someone thats alone in the cafeteria at lunchtime. An outreach can be organising a lunchtime concert with a Christian theme, putting up hearts with nice greetings on all of the lockers on Valentine’s Day, or just agreeing that everyone in the group will smile at people they pass in the school corridor. An outreach is what you do make it. We call it outreach because it’s about reaching out and doing something for someone else. My School, My Responsibility.
How do we do an outreach?
1. Get an idea! All schools are unique and an outreach that is a success in Bristol might not work in Manchester. Think about what you think works in your school. Are you at a school where a lot of people play music, or are they more into sport? Is it a school with a good atmosphere, or one where a lot of people get bullied? What kinds of needs do you see, and what can you do? If you don’t have any ideas you can always call the Teamers in your region and ask for help.
2. Decide when you want to do your outreach and try to plan so that you have plenty of time. At least a couple of weeks is usually minimum. Go to the head teacher, present what you want to do, and let them know that the reason you’ve started a group is to contribute to a positive environment in the school, that you want to encourage the students, that you want to work for an atmosphere without bullying, or whatever your reason might be.
3. Delegate the tasks between you in the group and make sure everyone is involved.
4. Do the outreach, and then make sure to evaluate it afterwards, so you can learn from it and make the next outreach even better.
What’s the Team?
We have several regional Teams working at one of our three regional bases (Birmingham, Bristol and Manchester). The main role of our volunteer Teams is to support existing school groups, help new groups get started, and visit churches to introduce the model and spread the concept. We also have a Media Team based at our HQ in Birmingham who work on resource development, promotional material and web.
How can I get in contact with one of the Teams?
You can find contact details under Contact or go to the team page.
Where do I find more information about the Team year?
Go to the team page and you’ll find everything you need to know there. You’ll also find a link where you can download the application form for joining the Team.
As a Youth Leader, how can I get involved?
If you’d like to get your church involved, check out the You & NG, Support NG and Events sections on our website to find out more about connecting with us and working together.
What’s New Generation’s attitude towards local church?
We love the Church, and our role is to partner with and work alongside local churches to inspire, encourage and help young Christians live out their faith in school. When the school day is over, so is New Generation, so outside of school hours, we encourage our groups and members to be engaged in their youth groups and in church. For more information, see our You & NG, Support NG and Events sections.
What’s New Generation’s attitude towards other organisations in schools?
New Generation is a complement to existing organisations engaged in schoolswork, and we regularly partner on projects with friends in other charities and ministries working in schools. Our focus is primarily on developing resources, material and training geared around peer-led initiatives, so that’s what we spend most of our time doing, but we encourage people to contact other organisations when our resources don’t fit their needs and criteria.
How is New Generation funded?
Most of our Team is made up of volunteers on a gap year, generally supported by private sponsors and their own savings. Their fees cover some costs, and we receive support from New Generation’s international foundation. We also rely heavily on donations from churches, businesses and our Supporters.
How can I become a Supporter?
As a Supporter, you can help us make a difference in our nation’s schools. For just £5 a month, we’re able to resource and support one peer-led Christian group with 3 magazines a year full of inspiration, tips and ideas, as well access to online resources such as presentations, devotionals and videos. We also provide on-site support from our trained volunteers who visit the groups regularly to encourage, support and pray for them. Our dream is to see a Christian presence in every school in Britain and give every young person the chance to hear the Gospel at least once a year. Your £5 puts us one school closer to that goal. For more information go to www.wearetomorrow.co.uk .
Does it cost anything to start a New Generation group?
No, it’s completely free. We will provide you with magazines, access to our NG+ login area, and you’ll also get visits from our Teams, all for free. We think that’s a pretty good deal.
How many schools do you have groups in here in the UK?
We have over 350 registered school groups all over the country. They’re all different shapes and sizes, but have a common goal to regularly pray and reach out in their schools.
With Christians from different churches involved, how do we keep unity in the group?
We believe it’s on God’s heart to see his people united, and what better place to start than the young generation? We encourage our groups to shift their attention from discussing differences to focusing on being an example in school. Leaving deeper Bible studies on doctrine and denominational tradition to the church allows the New Generation group to focus on prayer and outreach.
Do I have to be a Christian to be involved in a New Generation group?
No, anyone is welcome to attend meetings and investigate the Christian faith, and everyone is also welcome to join in with social action initiatives and other projects run by the New Generation group.

Get Involved
All we need now is a few simple details and we’ll be in touch to follow thing up. Just choose which of the drop-down options suits you and/or tick the appropriate boxes and we’re sorted. Dead easy!
I’m guessing you already know that we believe that Christian young people can make a difference in their schools and colleges. I’m also going to assume that that’s something you believe too. If you’re a young person, Church leader or schools worker, then we want to invite you to our training day; Faith, Hope & School. For over 5 years in the UK and since 1996 in Europe, New Generation has been supporting young Christians to live out their faith in a visible way. We’ve encouraged them to commit to prayer and outreach, and done our best to support them in doing that.
Over the years we’ve heard so many amazing stories and ideas. We’ve also seen some not so great ideas and some that are plain ridiculous. All that being said we want to pass those experiences on, and also hear what you are doing in school right now. You’ll also get an opportunity to meet other young people that are in the exact same position as you are.
The day is full of practical, interactive sessions all based around developing you as a young Christian who can positively impact the people around you. It’s not about success or numbers, it’s about following Jesus and being salt and light to a generation that needs to see him. It’s no easy task, but it’s still the right path and we hope the day will be inspirational, practical and will prepare you for the realities you face daily at school.
What can I expect the sessions to include?
- Prayer & Outreach
- Social Action and Jesus
- Bring out the organiser in you!
- Speaking to the Head teacher
- Shed-loads of testimonies
- Practical ideas and much much more…
Don’t take my word for it, you’ll just have to come along and see.
