10 IDEAS
Are you sure you’re the only Christian in your school? It’s very likely that there are other Christians out there you don’t know about, and often, when someone else takes an initiative and starts something, others want to join in. So, why not print some Wanted: Christian posters from NG+ and start getting the word out!
Put up some Text-a-Prayer posters in your school and pray for the people and requests that come in. Just make sure you get permission from your head teacher if you put your posters up.
Do a petition or raise money for a charity. It’s a great opportunity to show God’s love practically! Maybe you have non-Christian friends that would like to help you with a social action project?
Check the NG Calendar video on the outreach section of NG+, and get some inspiration for what you can do, and when.
Put encouraging notes on all the lockers in your school. Paper hearts on Valentine’s Day is a New Generation classic, but any day can be an opportunity to encourage someone. Maybe your friends from church can help you cut some cardboard and write messages? You can also get together and pray that the right message goes to the right person.
Hand out Bibles to your closest friends or your whole class. Wrap them nicely and give them away as Christmas or Birthday presents, or just to make an ordinary day that bit better.
Advertise a lunch meeting with a topic that you think would engage your school. If you don’t want to do the talk yourself, invite your youth leader or another Christian you think could do a good job.
Are there any decent Christian bands in the area? Ask them if they can come and perform at your school and share a short message during the concert.
Check out our 101 Ideas section (link) for more ideas. Many of the ideas work perfectly even if you’re the only person in your group.
Put together a Prayer Hit-List with 10 names. Start to pray for the 1st person on the list and move to the next person when you start to see change in the 1st person’s life.
KEEP GOING NO MATTER WHAT! Continue to advertise, have regular meetings, and continue to do projects to show your school who Jesus is.
Does the school board have the right to forbid us from starting a New Generation group?
No, starting a group or union of whatever kind is everybody's constitutional right. (In UK everybody has Freedom of Religion, which is protected by UK law). You can meet freely and speak freely. Some schools may not approve or agree with what you are doing because they want to have a multi-faith policy. However, providing that what you are doing does not affect the run of your school or interfere with the lessons, there is no reason for you to be unable to meet. If anything your meetings and activities improves your "spiritual, moral, social, cultural, physical and mental development, and thus the well-being of the individual" which is stated in the National Curriculum and should be enforced in every school: "Foremost is a belief in education, at home and at schools, as a route to the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, physical and mental development, and thus the wellbeing of the individual" (Values and purposes underpinning the schools' curriculum: National Curriculum p.10) The National Curriculum also states: "All National Curriculum subjects provide opportunities to promote pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Explicit opportunities to promote pupils' development in these areas are provided in religious education and the non-statutory frame- work for personal, social, and health education (PSHE)." p.21. If, therefore, you are not receiving this within your school or colleges, you can suggest that what you are doing is implementing a vital part of the National Curriculum that is currently missing in your school.
Do we have the right to preach the Gospel and pray for people in our school?
Yes. Article 18 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; this right includes freedom to change his/her religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his/her belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance. But you must respect other people's religion and belief. We want to see all people saved and becoming disciples of Jesus. This we do best through loving them as Jesus loves them, and witness for them about Jesus through our testimonies, not through Bible bashing people or forcing anyone to believe.
Do we have a legal right to have access to a room in our school for our New Generation meetings?
No, there is no law to support the right of getting a room for your gatherings at the school. The facilities of the school are at the rightful disposal of the school board. To have a room during school hours, a teacher should technically be present in the room with you. As you probably will meet during break and lunch times, teachers will not always be willing to give their time to you. You can still ask. However if other groups are being given rooms then you certainly have a case not to be discriminated against. Other suggestions are to use the school hall, gym or the music and drama block as they are available for all students to use.
Can we advertise in the school?
If you have a students' notice board, yes; otherwise you will need to get permission. Speak to the reception staff or the caretakers about where you can put up posters around the school. Please try to use the system in your favour – it will make life a lot easier. Remember you are a living notice board!
How about the rights for collective worship! Did you know that every school is supposed to allocate 5 minutes every day to "Collective worship"?
This is clearly stated in the Government aims from 1988: "Every school must by law provide religious edu- cation and daily collective worship for all pupils, with the exception of those pupils who are with- drawn from these activities by their parents. It is a matter of deep concern that in many schools these activities do not take place with the fre- quency required or to the standard which pupils deserve. The Government's aim is therefore to improve the quality of the religious education cur- riculum for pupils in order to ensure they have the best possible opportunity to develop through this area of the curriculum".
1. KNOW WHERE YOU’RE GOING A leader has 2 main characteristics: a) They’re going somewhere. b) They can influence people to come with them! Ask yourself what the plan is. What do you want to see happen in your school? How do you intend to get there? Take time to write down your plans at the beginning of the year and share this with the rest of the group! During challenging times you can go back to this and refresh the group members with the vision. People get excited when they have a focus and clear direction… and it inspires them to action! “He who thinks he leads and has no-one following him is only taking a walk” – Chinese Proverb
2. LOOK FOR PEOPLE’S STRENGTHS You’re not a one-man-mission-machine. You can’t do everything yourself! The best leaders are those who look for talents in their team or group and give them room to develop their gifts. For instance, if you’re planning a cake giveaway with a Bible tract and there’s someone practical in your group, let them buy the ingredients. If someone is creative, let them dress the cake table and design the flyers. If someone has a head for figures, let them take charge of the money box and do the accounts. Remember to keep encouraging your team along the way! “Encouragement is the oxygen of the soul” - Harvey Mackay “People have a way of becoming what you encourage to them to be, not what you nag them to be.” - Scudder N. Parker
3. THE GAP = GOD! In the same way that Jesus replied to the rich man “But one thing you still lack...”, there will always be things lacking in any kind of group or team. Maybe you don’t have the “right” people with the “right” talents, or you don’t have enough people to help, enough money, or enough time to do an outreach - but that’s where God steps in. His grace is sufficient for you, so believe that He will bridge the gaps in your life. Remember that He is bigger than you, and has the extra things you need right now. “If we’re growing, we’re always going to be out of our comfort zone.” – John Maxwell
4. LEARN FROM OTHERS AND EXPERIENCE You’ll have a lot of good ideas – but others do too! Check out our website for testimonies and ideas from other New Generation groups around the UK...and the world! Learn from your own experiences and mistakes. Evaluate your outreach events afterwards – was the event a success? What could you do better next time? What did you learn? Keep a school group journal to pass down from one year to the next! You may think that this seems like hard work now, but imagine the group in 5 or 10 years time being able to look back on years of entries with testimonies, experiences and answers to prayer. Leave a lasting legacy in your school! “The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.” – Elbert Hubbard
5. DREAM BIG DREAMS If you want to be a great leader, one of the best things you can do is to let your imagination run riot, think of new possibilities, and dream big dreams. Spend some time once a week imagining what you could do to impact your school. What new things have never been tried before at school? What could you do to bring Christianity back into the limelight at your school? If you were from a non-Christian background what would make you sit up and take notice of the Christians at school? As you think and dream, make sure to scribble down your ideas. This works even better in a group where people can shout out suggestions, even if some of them seem silly or small at the time. This exercise always results in loads of new ideas as you bounce things off each other. “Nurture your minds with great thoughts. To believe in the heroic makes heroes” -Benjamin Disraeli
6. STAY HAPPY A positive attitude will take you a long way. Circumstances may not always be ideal, but how you choose to see them is the most important thing. Sometimes, things may not turn out as expected, but when an outreach in your school doesn’t go so well or people don’t turn up for meetings, keep your head up high. There’s always something to be grateful to God for, and a positive spirit will end up attracting others. Attitudes are contagious, so make sure yours is one worth catching. “Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” - Psalms 126:2
7. BELIEVE IN YOUR TEAM When you believe the best in others, they will give you their best. Individuals may win a game, but teams win the championships. Great leaders will always raise up a team. Everyone in your school group is important, so don’t overlook the quiet ones, and together you can make an incredible impact on your school. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller
8. KEEP YOUR INTEGRITY The easy way to get things done is to cut corners or let our standards slip. But remember: people are watching you as a leader! We have choices everyday to do things the right way or the wrong way. It might be tempting to use a pirate copy of a DVD for an outreach, but why not spend a little extra and buy the real thing? God’s blessing will be on it! When you step into a position of leadership, people will be watching you, not only at school, but also outside of school. Does your life outside of school match the beliefs you stand for in your CU? Everything gets amplified as a leader, like a spot on a piece of paper. If the paper increases in size so will the spot. Make sure it’s the good stuff in your life that gets bigger. “When all kinds of trials and temptations crowd into your lives, my brothers, don’t resent them as intruders, but welcome them as friends. Realize that they come to test your faith and to produce in you the quality of endurance. But let the process go on until that endurance is fully developed, and you will find you have become men of mature character, men of integrity with no weak spots.” - James 1:2-4
9. DEVELOP YOURSELF As a leader you will be expected to know more, and people will often look to you for solutions. Don’t panic, you’re never going to have all the answers! But it is necessary to keep learning, to keep investing in yourself, and to keep teaching yourself new ways of working, new skills and ideas. Set a goal to read a new book every couple of months – life stories of great leaders and business people can be particularly inspiring e.g. John Wesley, Martin Luther King, William Booth, Mother Teresa, William Wilberforce or even Richard Branson and Alan Sugar. Also, why not sign up for our Wired Leader Training Days so you can develop yourself as a leader, learn new skills, and become more confident in your role? “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” - Sir Richard Steele
10. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP This needed writing in BIG letters, because it’s just so important for leaders!! The Bible says that if the shepherd is struck, the sheep get scattered (Matt 26:31). Everyone feels de-motivated and fed up sometimes, so when you feel like this, draw aside and spend some extra time with God, but don’t give up. Keep the meetings going even when you don’t feel like it. Hebrews 10:25 says “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another”. Your attitude will be contagious, whether good or bad! It’s maybe not your fault for being down, but it is if you fail to get up again. So remember Jesus needs you today, DON’T GIVE UP!
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” - Jim Rohn
WOULD YOU RATHER? Give your group cards that contain questions like “Would you rather eat flies or eat caterpillars?” All of the questions should be tough choices!
Two Truths and a Dream Two Truths and a Dream is variation on the classic icebreaker game Two Truths and a Lie in which people attempt to identify which of three statements is a lie. In this interesting version of the game, a person says something that is not true yet— but something they’d like in the future or a dream they have. Each person prepares three statements, two of which are true and one of which is a dream. In any order, the person shares the three statements to the entire group. The object of the game is to figure out which statement is the dream. The rest of the group vote on each statement, and the person reveals which one is the dream. For example, someone that has never been to Hawaii might say: “I visited Hawaii when I was young.” This interesting spin often leads to unexpected, fascinating results, as people often share touching dreams about their lives.
GIVE ME FIVE You only have 20 seconds to give 5 answers to random questions before giving the person next to you a high five, who then has to do the same as soon as you’re done! You can use pre-prepared questions on small pieces of paper, letting each person choose one before the game begins. This way everyone has to answer something different. Possible questions could include: Give me 5 answers to prayer! Give me 5 of the greatest inventions of man! Give me your 5 favourite books in the Bible! Give me your 5 favourite countries!
I NEVER DID THAT People sit in a circle. Give each of them 10 or 15 jellybeans or pennies. In turn, each person tells something they have never done. Anyone who has done it gives the speaker one of his or her jellybeans or pennies. After going around the circle twice, the person with the most jellybeans or pennies wins. For example: I have never travelled outside the UK. I have never eaten sushi. I have never played a violin. Of course the winner gets to eat the jellybeans or keep the pennies!
TOILET PAPER GET-TO-KNOW-YOU Have each person tear off squares of toilet paper. They can take as many pieces as they want. After everyone has some paper, each person has to tell one thing about themselves for each piece of toilet paper they have in front of them. This game can also be done with pretzels, peanuts, and other edibles!
ID GUESSING GAME The ID Guessing Game is a good, simple get-to-know-you game that is especially good for groups with new people. Pass out an index card and a pen to each person who is playing. Then each person has to write two things they’ve done and one they haven’t. The more unique and interesting the better, but the object is to make it hard for the others to guess that it’s your card. Then the cards are collected and the group votes on who they think the card represents and which item they haven’t done.
THE STRING GAME Buy a big roll of coloured yarn or string. Take a pair of scissors and cut strings of various different lengths — as short as 12 inches, and as long as 30 or more inches, then bunch all the pieces up into one big clump of string. Ask the first person in the group to choose any piece of string. Have the person pull on it and separate it from the other pieces of string. Then ask them to introduce themselves as they slowly wind the piece of string around their index finger. The funny part of this icebreaker game is that some of the strings are extremely long, so sometimes a person has to keep talking for a very long time! This is a good way to get everyone to start talking, even the quiet ones!
THE NAME GAME The Name Game is perfect when starting a New Generation Group for the first time, or at the start of a new school year when new members join, because it helps everyone learn each other’s names! Each person in the group has to pick a word that describes them as a person. The catch is, that the word must start with the first letter of their first name. For example, my name is Brad. I would say “Hello! My name is Brilliant Brad.” The person after me must say my adjective and name before saying theirs. So they would go, “Hello, Brilliant Brad, my name is Sweet Sarah.” Then the third person would go, “Hello, Brilliant Brad, and Sweet Sarah, my name is Easy-Going Evelina.” This continues on until all of the students have gone. Being last is hilarious in this game, because they have to remember everyone’s name AND adjective before stating theirs!
ARTISTIC INTRODUCTIONS Get everyone in the group into pairs, and give them each a piece of paper and a pencil. They then have 30 seconds each to look at one another whilst the other person tells them some key facts about themselves. Then they close their eyes and spend 1 minute trying to draw a portrait of the other person. Once they’re done, each person gets to hold up their portrait and introduce the person they were paired up with, telling a few of the facts about them to the rest of the group. The great thing with this game is that the worse you are at drawing, the better the game will be!

101 Tips and Ideas for Your Best School Year Ever
Unless you’ve got very good eyes, you’ll probably want to click the full-screen icon before you start reading this one. Just a tip.
Fundraising Ideas
Sometimes you’re going to need some cash for an outreach, like when you’re handing out Bibles to friends on World Book Day. Most of our Teamers have been there when they were in school running groups themselves, so we asked them to give you some ideas, and this is what they came up with…
Click on the image to download the poster in pdf-format. It’s A4-sized, so you’ll be able to print it with a normal printer. If you want to get serious and print it at a print shop, they’ll probably need a file with marks, bleeds, and other fancy stuff, so just send us an email at media@newgeneration.co.uk and we’ll send it over!
Does it cost anything to start a New Generation group?
No, it’s completely free. We will provide you with magazines, access to our NG+ login area, and you’ll also get visits from our Teams, all for free. We think that’s a pretty good deal.
How many schools do you have groups in here in the UK?
We have over 350 registered school groups all over the country. They’re all different shapes and sizes, but have a common goal to regularly pray and reach out in their schools.
With Christians from different churches involved, how do we keep unity in the group?
We believe it’s on God’s heart to see his people united, and what better place to start than the young generation? We encourage our groups to shift their attention from discussing differences to focusing on being an example in school. Leaving deeper Bible studies on doctrine and denominational tradition to the church allows the New Generation group to focus on prayer and outreach.
Do I have to be a Christian to be involved in a New Generation group?
No, anyone is welcome to attend meetings and investigate the Christian faith, and everyone is also welcome to join in with social action initiatives and other projects run by the New Generation group.
As a Youth Leader how can I get involved?
If you’d like to get your church involved, check out the You & NG, Support NG and Events sections on our website to find out more about connecting with us and working together.
What’s New Generation’s attitude towards local church?
New Generation wants to work alongside local churches to inspire, encourage and help young Christians to pray and reach out to friends and classmates. When the school day is over, so is New Generation. Outside of school hours we encourage our groups and members to be engaged in their youth groups and in church. For more information, see our You & NG, Support NG and Events sections.
What’s New Generation’s attitude towards other organisations in schools?
New Generation is a complement to existing organisations engaged in schoolswork and we focus primarily on developing resources, material and training that are not available elsewhere. We regularly partner on projects with friends in other charities and ministries working in schools.
How is New Generation funded?
Most of our Team is made up of volunteers on a gap year, generally supported by private sponsors and their own savings. Their fees cover some costs, and we also receive support from New Generation’s international foundation. We also rely heavily on donations from churches, businesses and our Supporters.
So you want to talk to us? We’re very friendly, and we like emails and phone calls a lot.

Get Involved
All we need now is a few simple details and we’ll be in touch to follow thing up. Just choose which of the drop-down options suits you and/or tick the appropriate boxes and we’re sorted. Dead easy!
I’m guessing you already know that we believe that Christian young people can make a difference in their schools and colleges. I’m also going to assume that that’s something you believe too. If you’re a young person, Church leader or schools worker, then we want to invite you to our training day; Faith, Hope & School. For over 5 years in the UK and since 1996 in Europe, New Generation has been supporting young Christians to live out their faith in a visible way. We’ve encouraged them to commit to prayer and outreach, and done our best to support them in doing that.
Over the years we’ve heard so many amazing stories and ideas. We’ve also seen some not so great ideas and some that are plain ridiculous. All that being said we want to pass those experiences on, and also hear what you are doing in school right now. You’ll also get an opportunity to meet other young people that are in the exact same position as you are.
The day is full of practical, interactive sessions all based around developing you as a young Christian who can positively impact the people around you. It’s not about success or numbers, it’s about following Jesus and being salt and light to a generation that needs to see him. It’s no easy task, but it’s still the right path and we hope the day will be inspirational, practical and will prepare you for the realities you face daily at school.
What can I expect the sessions to include?
- Prayer & Outreach
- Social Action and Jesus
- Bring out the organiser in you!
- Speaking to the Head teacher
- Shed-loads of testimonies
- Practical ideas and much much more…
Don’t take my word for it, you’ll just have to come along and see.
